General Rules



The Marlborough College Open Minds rules apply equally to all Students regardless of differences in ethnic background, culture, language, religion, gender, ability or disability.

All members of Marlborough College community have the right to enjoy their lives free of bullying and harassment (including racial or religious), and are expected to treat others as they hope to be treated themselves in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

Individuals have the right to expect any member of the Open Minds or Summer School staff to listen and to deal with a problem promptly and sensitively.

If any Student has a grievance, please speak to any member of staff in complete confidence.

As a condition of membership of Marlborough College Open Minds, Students are required:

  • To treat all others with respect and courtesy.
  • To take due care of all buildings and property, including personal possessions.
  • To fulfil all Open Minds commitments punctually and positively.

The following are expressly forbidden at all times:

  • Bullying
  • Sexual harassment.
  • Explicit sexual relations.

The following may not be used or possessed:

  • Tobacco in any form; electric cigarettes, matches and cigarette lighters; joss sticks; e-shisha pens.
  • Alcoholic drinks.
  • Guns, ammunition, explosives or fireworks.
  • Any illegal substances.
  • Any offensive weapon (no knives other than cutlery).
  • Motor bikes or cars.

Open Minds students are required to receive the Course Director's permission should they wish to:

  • be absent from Marlborough for a night.
  • to travel in a car driven by a visitor (who must be over 25 unless a member of the Student’s immediate family).
  • leave Marlborough for any reason.
  • be out of the College after 5.30 pm.

General Bounds

  • Overnight (10.45 pm Saturday to 6.45 am Sunday; 10 pm - 6.45 am other days) Students are confined to their boarding house.
  • During Marlborough College Open Minds courses and activities, students are restricted to the Marlborough College Campus.
  • The roofs of all buildings are Out of Bounds at all times, as is the Mound.


  • Students may not visit the bedrooms or residential areas of any other boarding house other than their own.
  • Visitors to the College may not sleep overnight in studies or bedsits.

Rules of Custom and Courtesy

  • Eating and drinking are not permitted in the streets.
  • Personal radios and mobile devices may only be used in bedrooms or sitting rooms and when travelling. They may not be worn when walking about the College and Town.
  • Laser pointers are not allowed.
  • Bicycles, skateboards and scooters are forbidden for general use around the College unless as part of an organized activity.
  • Hitch-hiking is forbidden.
  • IT facilities, whether College-owned or private, must be used in accordance with the Code of Conduct, which relates to Information Technology facilities, items of equipment and their use.
  • Inappropriate images or material may be neither stored nor viewed on a PC, laptop or memory device.
  • Private televisions, including mini televisions, are not permitted.

Dress Code

  • The Dress Code for Marlborough College Open Minds is informal.

Road Safety

  • Students must be road safety aware and should observe the following guidance:
  • Give the road your full attention when crossing, even if you are with a group of friends. Look out for them too.
  • Don't use your mobile to talk or text while you are crossing or waiting.
  • Listening to music is distracting while crossing the road – remember headphones may not be worn when walking about the College and Town.
  • Don't take chances when you cross the road – cars may not be able to stop. Always use one of the pedestrian crossings to cross the A4.
